  • This is a page to use to play with a few of the simpler features used to make a wiki page.
  • Click on Edit page above to open the page as a "document" in a "word processor."
  • Look at some of the tricks I've already used:
    • the * followed by a space to create a bulleted list
    • the double asterisks to indent even further
    • the | | lines around a word or phrase to create a box (a one by one table, really)
    • two asterisks on each side immediately surrounding any text I wish to appear in boldface.
    • the word <raw> in brackets to force special characters to appear as themselves, rather than as shortcuts to boldface, italics, underlining, etc.

NOTE: If you don't include the second bracket with the slash mark after the character, the feature will remain on for the entire page, which would be bad.

    • use <br> to start the text that follows on a new line.
  • Now try the experiments below. Be sure to click on Edit page above.

Highlight this text with your cursor and then hit the B.

Two asterisks should appear at each end of the sentence. Now click Preview to see what a visitor on the web would see.

Scroll back down to the word processor. PLEASE delete the stars for the next user.

Highlight this text with your cursor and then hit the I.

Two apostrophes should appear at each end of the sentence. Now click Preview to see what a visitor on the web would see.

Scroll back down to the word processor. PLEASE delete the apostrophes for the next user.

Highlight this text with your cursor and then hit the U.

A double underscore (__) should appear at each end of the sentence. Now click Preview to see what a visitor on the web would see.

Scroll back down to the word processor. PLEASE delete the underscore for the next user.

Did you note that the three hyphens made a line all the way across the page?

Use this space to type and preview. Get more help on the ExplainThis page in the SideBar to the right.
